Sustainability, climate change and poor work conditions were some of the key topics of 2016. I feel the new year will shed even more light on these global issues. Thankfully, in the past few years, awareness of these problems has become fashionable with every celebrity, from playboy Leonardo DiCaprio to the stunning Angelina Jolie standing up for world issues and trying to make a difference. In our first issue of Style for 2017, we shine the light on climate change, with a report on TedxScottbase, an event in Antarctica that will stream worldwide on January 22nd. This adds to the efforts being made to mark the 60th anniversary of Scott Base, as well as bringing the issues of climate change into focus. We speak with filmmaker Anthony Powell, who has spent a decade on the ice and dedicates his working life to making documentaries that aim to change our perspective and document the impact we are having on the planet. Anthony will be joined by a number of well-known celebrities and intellectuals in Antarctica including New Zealand music-award-winner and fabulous artist Gin Wigmore, who we also catch up with to find out what has inspired her to take part in this special event. Our home section, as always, is designed to inspire. FIND. If you are heading to one of the many summertime events over the holiday period, you will not find parking in usual places. The Christchurch City Council has taken a much-needed stand this year with no event parking in Hagley Park over summer. In recent years, the council has allowed people attending major events in Hagley Park to park on the sports fields near Carlton Mill corner, which in turn has caused a significant amount of damage to the park. The council will now be nurturing the area and has plans to upgrade the sports fields, so they are safe and suitable for community sport. Invisible energies, virtual realities unleashed is now showing at Christchurch Art Gallery. The exhibition is by Australian artists David Haines and Joyce Hinterding, who use experimental, digital, electronic and traditional media. Their most recent work was inspired by the 2011 Canterbury earthquakes and is an interactive, cinematic simulation of the natural and supernatural world. Projected eight metres wide in high resolution, it has several different levels to explore, each one taking the viewer deeper underground to discover hidden and mysterious terrains.

ChiCken kebabS with SeSame and peanut noodle Salad ingredientS 1 packet Ingham’s Honey Soy kebabs dreSSing 2 Tbsp sesame oil 1 clove garlic, crushed 1 Tbsp soy sauce 2 Tbsp sweet chilli sauce 100g smooth peanut butter 2 Tbsp lime juice

method for the dressing: whisk together all the dressing ingredients and set aside. for the salad: put the snow peas, beansprouts, red pepper, spring onions and noodles into a bowl. Pour the dressing over them and mix thoroughly to coat everything well. for kebabs: Cook by either grilling them in a 200°C oven for 12-15 minutes turning once or on a medium/hot barbecue or stovetop for 8 minutes turning once. GIN WIGMORE Singer/songwriter Gin Wigmore tells Style what it means to her to be realising a lifelong dream to go to Antarctica for TEDxScottBase, and what we can expect from her new album.

What inspired you to be part of TEDxScottBase? it was a combination of things. the idea of Antarctica itself is certainly a major reason to be part of teDxscottBase, alongside the anniversary of scott Base, which holds a very proud new Zealand heritage with its longstanding dedication to scientific studies and the preservation of such a beautifully rare ecosystem. i am always impressed by my nation’s perpetual efforts to earn itself such an integral place on the global map as a leader and inspiration on the issue of climate change and many other positive environmental structures from which other nations can observe and possibly learn from. Lastly, and quite possibly the most important of them all, is the imperative discussion and immediate action we need to take with climate change. this is an issue i have become highly concerned with and, for the last few years, have been diligently educating myself about. taking part in events such as this one – to shed light on a subject that affects us all so hugely – and, in turn, using my platform as a musician to help and educate my peers and the people around me is something i strongly wish to do if it can benefit our environment and the way we operate and exist on earth. so, basically, this opportunity as a whole is tremendously inspiring for me to be a part of.

What does the opportunity to go to Antarctica mean to you? it is the most surreal, overwhelming, and humbling feeling in the world to be offered this opportunity. As a new Zealander, Antarctica has always been a sort of a mythical and magical paradise. A place i was convinced i would only read about and never be able to physically experience. there are simply no words that can describe the kind of elation i feel to be embarking on such an incredible opportunity. Do you have a release date and name yet for your fourth full-length album? And what can we expect to hear? the good news is, the album is all done! the bad news is, i have no clue what i would like to name it yet. however, at this stage, it is set for an early march 2017 release. You can expect to hear a very eclectic mash of styles as i seem to struggle at settling for one particular genre of music with my albums. this album is no exception to that “rule” of mine. it definitely has an upbeat and more hopeful approach to it. this album kind of caught me off guard when i was writing it, so it has a very impulsive and light heart to it all – which i really love about it.

What was your favourite moment of 2016? Aside from being invited to play in Antarctica? i’m not sure anything else comes close... playing Corona Capital, [a two-day music festival] in mexico City, and finishing another album was definitely right up there in favourite moments though. What do you hope to achieve in 2017? the release of my fourth album. enhancing the awareness as well as the activism regarding climate change with my own exhibition of such efforts not only through music, but also in lifestyle choices and other personal demonstration. having kids that respect the earth and their place within it. Continuing to implore women to seek out their own independence and empowerment as individuals. The world’s southernmost continent will be the location for a very special event this January. In conjunction with the 60th anniversary of New Zealand’s official presence in Antarctica, TEDxScottBase is being filmed at Scott Base Antarctica on Sunday, January 15, and will feature 10 international speakers from a diverse range of backgrounds and interests. The aim is to highlight climate change, celebrate science and embrace forward thinking, with these talented and influential people providing a variety of viewpoints on the environmental challenges the world is facing. The event will play a crucial role in raising awareness about climate change, and other profound issues across the world, Antarctica New Zealand chief executive Peter Beggs says. The speakers, who include scientists and researchers, a photographer, a filmmaker, a journalist (wife of Jacque Cousteau’s grandson Philippe), an astronaut and award-winning musician Gin Wigmore, offer a phenomenal combination of expertise says event curator Kaila Colbin. “The scientists have committed most of their adult lives to understanding the dynamic nature of the icy continent and how Antarctica’s clues to past climates can inform our understanding of the way the world is changing now,” Kaila says. “[Astronaut] Dan Barry’s time in space has given him a perspective that very few can match, and Ashlan Cousteau has an unparalleled ability to combine science, environmentalism and entertainment. It’s going to be an outstanding and extremely diverse event.” Unlike other TEDx events held in other countries, however,

this one will not be open to the public. only those who are in Antarctica on scientific research missions will be able to attend the live event. But that doesn’t mean it won’t be available for everyone around the world to see. On Sunday, January 22, the entire event will be broadcast across the globe via the internet at website www.antarcticanz.govt.nz. There will also be live viewing events led by TEDxScottBase hosts during that day. One of the presenters, who will be speaking from first-hand experience of Antarctica over an extended period of time – 114 months, including 10 winters – is multi-award-winning New Zealand filmmaker Anthony Powell. His documentary Antarctica: A Year on Ice brought together footage he had collected over 10 years documenting the daily lives of the people who live and work on the ice through the changing seasons, keeping the bases running. Anthony has also contributed footage to many films and TV shows, including programmes on National Geographic and Discovery channels, and he featured in the Emmy award-winning BBC series Frozen Planet. In documenting environmental changes that have taken place in Antarctica, he says many of those that have occurred in the Scott Base area are not immediately apparent to the naked eye. “It is far enough south that with temperatures not often getting above freezing, changes in the surrounding ice are quite subtle. I have personally noticed how the degree of annual surface melt on the ice shelf appears to have increased. However, on a wider scale, Antarctica is seeing massive changes. It is the proverbial canary in the coal mine, and the canary has fallen off the perch

and is fluttering about at the bottom of the cage.” So, should New Zealand and other nations be doing more to protect Antarctica as well as addressing climate change? Anthony says that as one of the founding nations of the Antarctic Treaty, New Zealand has a great history in Antarctica and an impressive catalogue of scientific papers and discoveries. “Carefully recorded observations from 60 years of continuous operations at Scott Base are proving to be an amazing ongoing resource for scientists still working there now. I think Antarctica itself is being well looked after in terms of operations there, with continually improving environmental protocols. Where we are failing is in the damage being done remotely back at home in the rest of the world.” Anthony says he and the other speakers hope TEDxScottBase will raise a greater awareness of Antarctica, what the global environmental issues are, and what we can do about them. “Climate change is not something that is just a cause for tree-

It is more a case of how much effort we are willing to put in to minimise the damage. what was the brief for this design? the site for this project is very exposed given its open rural setting. so, the brief was quite rigid in its requirement for shelter and privacy. the budget wouldn’t stretch to the luxury of large landscaped bunds and structures in conjunction with the house construction. it became apparent quite early that a courtyard layout was going to work best in this situation. sheltered landscape planting and land formation would be undertaken by the client in due course. spatially, this form also lent itself best to their requirement for a distinct separation from the bedrooms to the living portion of the house. sick of getting robbed in new Zealand by power companies they had asked to ensure the heating was less reliant on the “grid”. as water heating is a sizeable component of the average power bill and there was no desire to go gas, we developed an old-school train of thought with modern technology. a woodfired wetback system backed up with solar hot water (evacuated tubes) on the roof for the summer months was adopted. they are by no means off the grid, but certainly happy with the outcome. the wetback also charges the hydronic system in the exposed slab throughout the living and bathroom areas. it is at its absolute maximum for the 6kw and square area it is servicing. Materially, the brief was uncomplicated and honest, leaving it pretty much up to me. the okoume plywood and cedar batten cladding were derived for their economy construction efficiency as was the commercial-grade roofing. The exposed slab and other interior finishes are left as practical as possible for a relaxed family farmhouse.

How did the rural setting influence the design? The photo [top image] that Sarah (Sarah Rowlands Photography) took for my adnZ | resene architectural design awards entry that really captures what i was trying to achieve in the design from an exterior perspective. it’s a long-distance shot with the frame just clipping the pasture line and the house poised against the tall trees to the south. i think in that photo, for me at least, the ideas i put on paper with the rural setting in mind have worked.

“There are quite a few little details that you probably wouldn’t notice at first glance.” – Nic Curragh Can you describe the ultimate vision you had for this project? i wanted to design a house that sat nicely on the landscape, but also had a presence. one that evoked a smile upon entry, didn’t burden them financially but, most importantly, made the owners house-proud. did you know you were designing an award-winning home? Hell no! I knew, as the spaces were coming together and the finer details were being finished off, that we had something special. The owners were stoked, and the builders (Sinclair Builders Ltd) were proud, as they should be. there was some tricky detailing that they’ve completed very well. were principles of sustainability considered and/or implemented? where possible materials and products used were assessed on their sustainable merits, but we certainly did not start out with the intention of applying for accreditation in this field upon completion. are there any unique features within this home? well, obviously the two cedar bay windows on the north gables make somewhat of a statement. Functionally, they work well in both the lounge and main bedroom as great spots to chill and read a book in the sun, watch the weather change or, as they’ve discovered this past spring, rain shelter underneath for the lambs. there are quite a few little details that you probably wouldn’t notice at first glance, but this is what I enjoy; the making, putting things together, in unorthodox ways. what is your favourite feature of the house? i do love the bay window seats, but also a couple of steel and timber shelving units i designed within the lounge and main bedroom wardrobes. these i installed myself with the clients one weekend. they consist of folded 5mm plate steel and american white oak timber all held together with bespoke wedge connections. it’s certainly very satisfying when these little details come together, and the desired result is meet.

were there any major hurdles to overcome â&#x20AC;&#x201C; be they structural or location based? the only real issue that comes to mind is meeting the new Waimakariri District Council floodplain heights: we had to elevate the slab. so, this resulted in quite a bit of extra concrete in one particular area as the bearing capacity required us to go deeper. it also put a delay in the construction programme. however, other than that, and a few dramas with the concrete polisher, everything went ok. The Springbank Downs house was the national winner of the Residential New Home Between 150sqm And 300sqm category at the 2016 ADNZ | Resene Architectural Design Awards.

whaT was The arChiTeCT Thinking? Richard Dalman gives Cantabrians an architectural challenge for the holidays. PHOTOGRAPHy anywhere i roam When we see and experience a building we are often moved positively or negatively, and sometimes we just don’t know what to think. Buildings have the ability to create an emotional response. Often this response is based on our upbringing, what we are used to or what we expect a building to be. Buildings can challenge us, and this is good. No doubt people have had these responses about the rebuild. Over the summer holidays, I encourage Cantabrians and visitors alike to explore the city’s new buildings with fresh eyes. Rather than just go “love it”, “hate it”, “what the…”, look a bit closer and try to determine “Why?” – why is the building designed like that? Why does it create the response I’m feeling? Try asking yourself these questions: • Is the building fit for purpose? • Does it function well for its intended use? • Does it sit well in its local environment? • Is it a good neighbour, either by fitting or contrasting with the adjacent building or space? • Does it make sense in its natural landscape and the local climate? • Does the building appear to be environmentally sustainable? This can be hard to determine on the first inspection, but look for local or recycled materials, excessive heating/cooling systems versus natural heating and ventilation, and wasteful space. Consider whether the building could take on another use in 20 years’ time once its current use has become redundant.

• Does the building help create positive outdoor spaces, such as the Stranges Lane buildings? Rather than being a standalone object, a building can best serve its community when it works to create or positively enhance public spaces such as streets, squares and laneways. • Has it been constructed within a tight budget? Sometimes this will compromise a building, but often cost constraints open the door for innovative thinking and use of materials. Re:START container mall and other post-earthquake pop-up structures are great examples. • Does the building speak of its time utilising current and appropriate technology – such as the Young Hunter House office building in Victoria Street that uses flexible joints to move with earthquakes – or is it just old technology or merely a

resurrected style from a previous era? • And lastly, does it delight you? Vitruvius in The Ten Books on Architecture wrote buildings should offer commodity (usefulness and function), firmness (they should stand up and not leak!) and delight (style, proportion, beauty). Does the building make your heart race or relax you, surprise you, make you feel good? Does it sing? I have been delighted many times by various buildings around the world and in Christchurch, including the Great Hall at the Arts Centre, the College House Chapel in Ilam, Seascape Retreat on Banks Peninsula, and even architect David Hill’s living room in his sea-side house. In every case, I know “why”. At the end of the holidays, after your inquisitive observations, will you also know why? I will test you.

SUN & SHADE Landscape architect Craig Wilson looks at options for integrated outdoor living that best maximise your space. Our attitudes and reaction to summer sunshine have changed over the years. The days of prolonged tanning until ‘golden brown’ are over. A subtle change is following this in the location, design and configuration of outdoor spaces. In Canterbury, we would tend to locate our outdoor living space in a north-west orientation, with a strong connection to the key activity rooms of a home. This will result in a warm area for afternoon outdoor living and the possibility of some shelter being created by the house design from the prevailing easterly wind. However, this can result in an outdoor area that, on occasion, is simply too hot and exposed to the sun with no relief.

In recent years I’ve noticed a shift, where the requirement for shade is now an essential part of the landscape design brief from clients. If thoughtfully considered, an area of shade protection can be created to seamlessly complement a patio space that’s fully exposed to the sun. This can take the form of a built overhead structure, ie pergola or louvre roof, or be as simple as some well-placed canopy-forming shade trees. Umbrellas can be well utilised to create shade when and where you need it. Quality permanent umbrellas can offer a rotating function that allows them to be moved over an area when required and then moved away to a discreet storage position on cooler days or for the winter.

BY THE ENVIRONMENT Take a moment to appreciate and enjoy one of the world’s oldest art forms, and see how married artists Trevor and Lorraine Polglase can produce entirely separate work from the same material and environment. WORDS AnnE HuDSon From the dawn of time, humans have formed shapes from stone; carved artefacts have been discovered that predate cave paintings. Carving from stone is different than creating a bronze or ceramic sculpture where the form is built up by the addition of material. The stone sculptor has to remove material to reveal a shape. There is little room for error or a change of mind. The shape is hewn from the marble or stone then polished, transforming the stone, releasing its inner beauty. Trevor and Lorraine Polglase live and work on a four-acre beachside, tropical property in Golden Bay. As full-time artists, with a lifelong interest in art, they produce, among other things, beautifully crafted marble sculptures. Golden Bay is a magical part of the world. Just a mention of the name seems to cast a spell on the viewer adding a hidden value to the work. Set between two national parks – Kahurangi and Abel Tasman – Golden Bay provides a fabulous environment in which the Polglases are immersed, with rivers, hills, trees, beaches and a benign climate. This area has long been attractive to artists and craftspeople and, for the sculpting fraternity, there is the added attraction of Takaka Hills marble, which provides a material that is of a high quality. The marble comes in many colours: black, grey, green and white. The Kairuru quarries were used to source marble for the first Parliament buildings in Wellington, and much of this has since been recycled by other artists. Lorraine says, “You’ve got to let the marble speak, the beauty of the marble has to come through.” Artists often say they create art in response to their environment. Their love of nature inspires the subject matter of their work. This seems an obvious type of connection and a limitless source of inspiration. Lorraine’s influences are sourced directly from the environment, from the small shells and driftwood on the beach to the sculptural rocky limestone outcrops. Lorraine loves birds and often shapes generic birds from marble and other stones she has found and is captivated by. The luminosity of the materials used adds that essential sparkle to the work. Her

work is gentle and tactile; appealing and pleasing, fitting into both outdoor and indoor settings. Trevor, on the other hand, despite working in an identical material, produces more formal, modernist, abstract shapes using the stone itself to dictate the outcome. His shapes are reminiscent of Barbara Hepworth’s sculptures. He uses clear flowing curved forms and lines, which portray more conceptual ideas and shapes as of formed by water or wind, smoothed by time. Both artists have exhibited widely within New Zealand. They are loyal exhibitors at Art in a Garden, Flaxmere, Hawarden and are always most sought after at that event.

hair today, GoNE TomoRRoW With so many different medical beauty treatments on offer it’s hard to know which are the most effective and why. Rosa Guthrie gives us the inside word on two well-known hair removal options: laser and iPl/vPl. Gone are the days or tirelessly waxing and shaving with no respite... These days more and more people are opting for more permanent solutions for removing their unwanted hair. But which of the two technologies should you choose? I often find there is confusion in understanding the difference between Laser hair removal and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), also known as Variable Pulsed Light (VPL). Both are treatments widely used for hair reduction and involve producing light energy, which is then absorbed into the dark pigment of the hair, ultimately causing damage to the hair follicle. The main difference between the two, however, is in the technology each use to generate the light, as well as the different properties of the light being used. IPL machines produce a broad spectrum of wavelengths (like a light bulb), which cannot be focused to a concentrated beam. Wavelengths are dispersed at a variety of depths, and only some of these wavelengths will be effective for hair reduction. Some of the light can be absorbed into the surrounding tissue, leading to heating of the pigment in the skin. Laser machines produce a single wavelength, which is a pure light consisting of one single colour and form. This has a very concentrated beam and specifically targets the melanin in the hair follicle. Laser machines set to emit the exact wavelength required to treat the individual’s hair. The type or colour of hair and skin will determine the tuning settings of the laser machine. For example, if you have on olive skin tone the treatment you will receive will be different to that of someone with a lighter complexion. What’s involved? • Consultation – to assess skin type and hair growth. Heritage is important as there are two types of laser – the YAG for darker skin and LASE for fair skin. Using the wrong laser for the skin type can cause pigmentation. • Preparation – at home Shave the area being treated the morning of the laser appointment. No fake tan on the area. • Procedure The laser technician cleans the areas being treated to remove any perfumes or creams. Treatment itself is relatively pain free. A cooling machine sits alongside the laser hand piece to take the heat out of the skin post treatment.

I flew a plane. I took off and landed a four-seater Piper Warrior. And you could, too. On a beautiful summer’s day, with not a cloud in the sky, I arrived at the Canterbury Aero Club (CAC) for a flying lesson. Equipped with nothing, but ready for anything. As advised, I had swapped the skirt-and-heels combo for something more sensible, topped off with the fluoro vest provided. Josh, the instructor for my hour-long flying experience, wasted little time and we were soon climbing into “Lima Juliet Delta”, one of four Piper Warriors in the fleet. There are no prerequisites restricting who can jump into a plane’s cockpit. Josh assures me my weaknesses in maths and science won’t be exposed at high altitude – though secondary school passes in English, maths and physics will help those looking to gain a private pilot’s licence. In fact, there are enough parallels with driving a car to make the activity less foreign than one might expect. Seatbelt and head unit on, a series of switch flicking by Josh, the all-clear over the radio and we were taxiing. My feet controlled the plane’s movements left and right with corresponding pedals, my right hand was on the throttle and eyes were focused on the many dials on the ‘dash’ that highlighted our speed. With arms practically redundant, I manoeuvred the plane down the straights and around the corners. The club has its own grass runways but also shares sealed ones with the Christchurch International airport. As an Air New Zealand Boeing took to the skies, I opened up the

throttle. When the optimum speed was reached, I pulled gradually back on the yoke (aka control wheel), and we had lift off. It’s a truly unreal experience. Before you know it, you find yourself as high as 2500 feet (760 metres) and Christchurch is spread out below. We flew over the city, out to Sumner, around Godley Head, to Lyttelton and back. The day couldn’t have been better. The sea was a striking duck-egg blue against the sun-baked heights of Banks Peninsula and the wind was minimal. A bump as we soared over Sugarloaf was as close as it got to ‘turbulence’. Club CEO Alan Booth had mentioned that for those learning to fly it is just as important to experience bad weather as it is good. While I had my fingers crossed for perfect conditions, lessons seldom need to be postponed. Back to the job at hand and there was just one more task to tackle: landing. Josh – cool, calm and collected – talked me through the process and, before I knew it, there was the runway. Nose down for descent, I pulled up near ground level to enable the plane to land on its rear wheels. We made it. I taxied us back in, honing my new-found skills to have the Piper Warrior bouncing over the central cat’s-eyes, as straight as an arrow. Back on terra firma, the adrenaline was pumping. Josh had made it seem like the most normal process in the world, yet I still couldn’t believe I had taken control of a plane. There’s a lot more to learn to truly understand what makes a plane coast through the clouds, but there’s no doubt a repeat performance would be just as exhilarating. I think I’ve caught the bug.

Motoring writer Ross Kiddie drives the AMG C-Class coupe, which reinforces his desire for V8 engines. I have a friend who is a big V8 engine fan, but he is a worried man. The reason being is that when Holden and Ford stop producing cars in Australia next year the era of the big Aussie V8 will most certainly be gone. My friend is a Walkinshaw Commodore owner who regularly upgrades his vehicle. It’s unlikely he’ll ever own another Holden and he is looking at alternatives. We got chatting at the time I was driving a C-Class Coupe from the Mercedes-Benz stable. It was a C63 S which, as its nomenclature suggests, has a big engine – a V8 to be exact. Even though the displacement is a lot smaller, 4-litre against 6-litre, my friend was interested in the C63 S, and being a professional person its $172,900 price tag didn’t seem too daunting. The C-Class Coupe is obviously an extension of the C series sedan and wagon and its price starts $100,000 below that of the S. There are four and six-cylinder versions, petrol and diesel making the C-Class coupe line-up very comprehensive. However, just like my friend, the V8 would be the model for me. Thanks to the help of twin turbochargers, it has mammoth power outputs – 375kW and 700Nm. That’s substantial considering its displacement of 3982cc isn’t huge, but what is huge is the performance that is extracted, not just from the engine, but the entire package reeks of sporty appeal. And the C63 S is engineered to deliver a purposeful driving experience. There is an array of drive modes that alter the suspension and engine management protocols so that swift momentum can easily be attained. Of course, you don’t have to drive the C63 S hard to enjoy it; it has the Mercedes-Benz feel of overall adaptability, but it is a car which has dynamics geared for open-road touring, and that is where I spent most of my time in the test car. Power is delivered through a seven-speed direct shift gearbox;

effectively you treat it like a normal automatic, but such is the shift speed and low and close ratios, the combination of engine power and transmission is structured for speed. And when you give the big V8 some freedom it spits and barks out the exhaust pipes to give you the audible sensation along with the feeling of acceleration. The exhaust note can be tamed with the press of a button, but I don’t know why you would want to do that, the blast from the rear as the engine backs off during gearshift is absolutely delightful. Drive is sent to the rear axles and then through huge Pirelli PZero performance tyres. Grip is phenomenal. There is a likelihood traction can easily be broken as the rear squirms under power, although the electronic safety systems intervene as well as they can.

I took the test car west-bound through to Terrace Downs resort and thoroughly enjoyed the C63 S on the best roads in Canterbury. Even though it is constantly firm through the suspension it cruises the long straights comfortably, but the driver is always aware there is something delightful sitting up front, and the engine likes to be working hard, thundering as it does so. In the tight and twisty stuff the steering is beautifully weighted and directional accuracy is simply amazing. The C63 S is a biggish car and weighs in quite tubby near 1800kg, but it doesn’t feel weighty and steers with precision. There’s always the wonderful feeling from the rear as drive is planted to ground, and in a corner the driver can feel the axles and suspension moving – doing their bit to maintain traction and allowing the rest of the car to move swiftly through any challenge. On the subject of speed, the C63 S will lunge to 100km/h from a standstill in 3.9sec, and will make a highway overtake in 3.3sec (80km/h to 120km/h), making it one of the swiftest cars I’ve ever driven. Mercedes-Benz also claims a 290km/h top speed when fitted with a dynamic driver’s package. It is also rated with an 8.7l/100km (33mpg) combined cycle fuel usage rating, which by my reckoning are all impressive figures. And it doesn’t finish there, not only is the C63 S one of the prettiest coupes I’ve had the good fortune to drive, it is beautifully appointed inside and is fitted with all the trick gear that makes Mercedes-Benz such a desirable purchase in the first instance. Column space doesn’t allow for comprehensive detailing of the fitment level nor the plush environment in which the occupants (four) travel, but I can say it is a most desirable purchase. And with the way Mercedes-Benz finished 2016, there is no shortage of buyers flocking to the brand. The C63 is another

FOOD news in past few years there have been many changes to the ways we talk about, shop for and eat food. Victoria Tait breaks down some food trends set to shape 2017.

MaSter ChefS A new generation is about to lead the way in the food industry. Generation Z has an entirely different relationship with food. Born pre-2000 onwards, this emerging group is more likely to eat fresh, healthy home-cooked meals, and both females and males think that cooking is enjoyable and has a celebrity-like following. They prefer stove-top to microwave cooking and are more intuitive cooks. They are the most ethnically-diverse generation as ethnic foods are the norm. This gives them a natural understanding of many different flavour combinations. Gen Zers are also more financially cautious and demand real value from the foods they consume in and out of the home. With a strong understanding of media and advertising, they also are known not trust brands and demand transparency. Watch this space.

SuStainability Many of us now are making food decisions based on sustainability; we are much pickier on where and how our foods are made, grown, and packaged. Familiar selections now include cage-free eggs, free-farmed meat, organic coffee beans and fair-trade chocolate (to name a few). The question is what else will we discover in the coming year that we need to take note of and be more educated about when purchasing?

For example, the “99% fat-free” label that overlooks the product’s sugar content, which, if not burned quickly, will still turn into fat. Consisting of many Cuban favourites, the sharing platter is piled high with spicy wedges, jerk chicken wings, achiote chicken on rice, sausages, chorizo and roast pepper croquettes, grilled mushrooms, and pulled goat tostada. the two of us only just manage to clear the plate, delighting at the array of flavourful morsels. the Cuban greets its patrons with open arms. the authentic menu satisfies, but its atmosphere is where it truly shines. As we stepped into the panoramic established on a sunny Sunday afternoon, we felt as though we were setting off on an adventure. The seafood-centric menu has an array of options to satiate all levels of hunger. opting for mouthwatering scallops wrapped in bacon to start, we followed with the catch of the day, which happened to be blue cod. The mains – pesto-crusted blue cod, served on top of shell pasta and pan-fried blue cod with herbed potatoes – did not disappoint. The food was beyond delicious and the waitstaff attentive. The restaurant is serious about seafood. If you spy a fishing trawler enter the harbour, there is a good chance it’ll be supplying its catch to the kitchen the very same day. Watching your meal come in is a novel proposition and something that makes the fisherman’s Wharf a genuinely unique experience. A lovely day out of town could not be spent better than by sitting back to watch sprightly ponies and their courageous riders gallantly pursuing a little white ball around the lawn. It was a humid, overcast day which welcomed guests to a Day At The Polo, to benefit Ronald McDonald House South Island (RMHSI), later turning to blistering sun. Within the marquee, tables were dressed with roses in readiness for luncheon, the hubbub of conversation and laughter making ears ring as outside, hooves beat upon the turf. After fabulous food, luxury auction prizes and exciting action on field, it was good to sit back and listen to the breeze blowing through the poplars.

MONA VALE HOMESTEAD AND PANTRY OPENING GARDEN PARTY The afternoon sun kissed the treetops and glinted off the waters of the river meandering through the grounds of Mona Vale. On the lawn, glasses were being clinked in toasting and platter after platter of fine comestibles consumed as the re-opening of the homestead was celebrated. The jewel in the crown of Fendalton, for so long forlorn and empty as the refurbishment agonised on, now shone in glory, made as new for the benefit of Christchurch. The opulent and elegant grandeur drew guests in to stand in wonder and give thanks that this precious treasure of heritage, against great odds, was saved and stands sturdy for the future.

The duvet of cloud hanging in the sky above the city kept the temperature at a pleasant level, just right for socialising among the flowers. St George’s Hospital garden was dressed up for the annual Christmas party enabling guests, staff and friends to mix and mingle. Exquisite festive fare was in abundance, the tastes complimented by the scent of roses carried on the gentle and soft late afternoon air. The conversations and catching up continued until the curtain of evening descended to call time on the joyous proceedings and friends departed having exchanged seasonal blessings.

For 12 months, China Southern Airlines has been winging travellers back and forth between Canterbury and enchanting, mysterious Asia, thence on to many parts of the world. Three times every week, the air bridge is open between Guangzhou and Christchurch International Airport, the gateway to the south. HOW TO Give and Receive Compliments We spent the final months of last year teaching you the importance of etiquette. A new year can mean a new you, and so we start 2017 with our top tips on how to give and receive compliments – politely. WORdS VICTORIA TAIT “any compliment should be delicately given. any attempts to be overly gushy can appear sycophantic and embarrassing to the recipient, and creepy to others.” – John Morgan, Debrett’s New Guide to Etiquette and Modern Manners (2007). GivinG Compliments 1. Do not just say the first thing that pops into your head. If you want to give a compliment take a minute think about it and then say it sincerely. 2. Make it about them and not about you. 3. Don’t overdo it! There is nothing more unrefined than a continued gushing compliment. Say what you have to say, smile, then move on. 4. Ensure you use the right wording. For example, if you want to compliment someone on their evening attire say, “You look beautiful in that dress,” rather than, “Gosh, you look so slim and lovely this evening.” The latter could imply something about their previous state. 5. A compliment should be honest. If you can’t mange that,we suggest you follow the golden rule – if you can’t say something nice, just don’t say anything!

Be careful if you are complimenting the opposite sex. A woman-to-man or man-to-woman compliment can often be perceived as flirting. If this is not your intention, simply back away from the conversation with a shy smile. On the other hand, if this is your gameplan, we suggest furiously batting your eyelids afterwards. If you are a man complimenting a woman, who is not your wife, girlfriend or partner, do not let this be about clothing. No one in the world will believe that it’s the ‘dress’ you are admiring. However, if you are seeking to end your current relationship, this is a fast-tracked way to do so. How you give a compliment is as important as what you say. Eye contact is key – it speaks volumes about your sincerity. Just don’t hold the look for too long or the recipient might start to think you have something seriously wrong with you.

ReCeIVIng A COmplImenT 1. Receiving a compliment is difficult for many of us, unless you are an American. Often our first reaction is to try and deflect attention by demurring or putting ourselves down. This is hardly a graceful response, and makes the compliment-giver feel bad, so please refrain from doing this. 2. Don’t respond with “I know” or, even worse, “I do look great, don’t I?” If you have used these responses in the past you might have noticed a serious decline in favourable comments. 3. As when giving a compliment, make sure you look the compliment-giver in the eyes when you thank him or her. No blushing, or turning aside unless you’re intention is that of rule 6. 4. Simple is always best. You need only two words: thank you, and a smile.
